Sketch: Immediately on graduation from college Colonel Bassett entered the US Forest Service and was assigned to the Central Rocky Mountain Region. Later he was transferred to Alaska where he remained until 1917. In June 1917 he entered the US Army at Fort Niagara, NY and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He showed superior excellence as an instructor in combat
