World War II honor portrait of veteran John J. Doerr, former student of The State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Date & Place of Death: Killed in plane crash on routine training flight at Jackson Field, Mississippi on December 21, 1941.
Sketch: Lieutenant Doerr graduated in 1937 with specialization in Landscape Forestry. Following his graduation he was employed as a member of the technical staff at the CCC camp at Margaretsville, NY. In 1937 he enlisted in the US Air Force as a flying cadet and was trained at Randolph Field in Texas and at Mitchell Field New York where he received his lieutenant's commission. He served at Langley Field, VA and at Jackson Field, MS. While at Jackson Field, Lieut. Doerr was athletic and public relations officer of the 38th Bombardment Group. During his undergraduate days he was intercollegiate middle-weight wrestling champion and in his junior year he was captian of the Syracuse University wrestling team. The swimming pool at Jackson Field had been named "Doerr Pool" in his memory.
